View Photo Album of Recycled Object Art with Langata Women's Prisoners >> Read all posts about Langata Women's Prison >> On February 3, 2009, Harambee Arts’ staff member, Edcard Muteshi, led a two-day “making art out of found and recycled objects” workshop, with the women of Langata Prison’s HIV+ support group. Edcard mesmerized the women with a great array of colorful materials including beads, seeds, bottle tops, buttons, pipe cleaners, sisal and other bits and pieces. They were engrossed in their projects for hours and Edcard did a wonderful job of providing individual attention and assuring that everyone made something […]

View Photo Album of Langata Women's Prison >> High Dear Mother, First is to greet you, I love you so much. Deep down in my heart I thank God for meeting such a wonderful person as you. I know it’s an opportunity and may the good Lord bless you so much. I didn’t know that one day I will meet such nice people as you. When I came to prison I thought it was the end for me. I didn’t know I will survive the prison life. I thought I might die before completing my sentence but thank God he […]

When I finally made my way outside of the gate to the taxi I walked backwards and continuously blew kisses to them as they stood around (inside the gate) blowing kisses and waving to me. I put my many bags in the taxi and turned around to blow more kisses and suddenly darling Elizabeth started to run toward me, through the prison gate and I ran toward her and I lifted her up and hugged her and […]

View Photo Album of Langata Women's Prison >> The women love dressing up with the brightly colored scarves that I carry around. I guess they don’t often get to play with costumes in jail…it’s a pity. One of the main prison wardens (a woman) showed up today during the workshop and she called me aside. With a very concerned  expression she said, “Some of them are having intercourse, woman to woman. Can you tell them to stop?” She added, “That would help me a lot because they don’t listen to me.” Helllooooo? I was so exhausted today that I could […]

View Photo Album of Langata Women's Prison >> Harambee Arts was invited to conduct a pilot study with HIV+ women prisoners at Langata Prison in May 2008 in collaboration with TICAH (Trust for Indigenous Culture and Health) and WOFAK (Women Fighting AIDS in Kenya).  One of the women’s wardens, known as “madam” to the inmates “came out” as HIV+ during the winter of 2007. She was granted permission to form a women’s support group for prisoner’s who were willing to be tested and who then chose to make their status public within the prison. Initially she had a group of […]
